Overview
Ten oral history interviews were conducted by students in three courses at Oberlin, 2017–2018, taught by ethnomusicologist Ian Macmillen, Russian and East European Studies, in collaboration with Cleveland violinist Steve Piskor.
The violinist George Batyi (b. 1959) donated his collection of sound recordings and sheet music of Romani music to the Oberlin Conservatory Library in April 2016, facilitated by Dr. Macmillan and art historian Liliana Milkova. Styles include Hungarian-Slovak Romani music, “Gypsy” jazz, and Russian “Gypsy” romances.
