Peace Paper Project
October 02, 2024
The Peace Paper Project is an international organization of hand papermakers, art therapists, activists and fine artists. The program which is based in Hamburg, Germany, works with communities to establish papermaking programs that use the book arts to address issues of war and terrorism, trauma and loss, and social and political strife. The most recent work has been focused on papermaking programs with displaced Ukrainian families in Estonia, Germany and France.
As part of Peace Paper Project's fall North American tour, co-director and master papermaker Drew Matott will engage with Oberlin college students through an interactive demonstration. Students will be able to make unique paper art using clothing from Ukrainian refugees and United States Military uniforms. Students are encouraged to bring in an article of clothing that can be shared in the making of a community batch of pulp and transformed into beautiful and expressive sheets of paper.
In addition, Matott will lecture about how he got involved with papermaking during his undergraduate studies in printmaking; and how he has used his skills and passion for community engagement use the book arts to have a profound impact on healing populations throughout the world.
