The master class with author David Giffels will be held on November 2, 2023, from 4:30-6:00 PM, Library Learning Lab, Terrell 113 (Mudd Center). Pizza will be provided.

Me Me Me!: Crafting the Nonfiction Character of Yourself

How does a writer approach the person they know best--their own self--to craft a successful first-person character on the page? In this generative workshop, we'll explore self-awareness, vulnerability, cinematic perspective, and other concepts as pathways toward writing successfully in the persona of the I-narrator. Although rooted in creative nonfiction, the discussion and exercise will relate to fictional and poetic approaches as well. Participants will create and have the opportunity to share a piece of original writing.

The master class is limited to fifteen students. Students interested in creative writing are welcome to sign up.

David Giffels has written six books of nonfiction, most recently Barnstorming Ohio: To Understand America, described by Publishers Weekly as a "trenchant mix of memoir, reportage, and political analysis." His other titles include the memoir Furnishing Eternity: A Father, A Son, a Coffin, and a Measure of life, a New York Times Book Review "Editors' Choice," and winner of the Ohioana Book Award. He has a new book coming out on American new wave band Devo.
