The James Walter Bass and Idella Bass Richardson endowed book fund has been providing support to the Oberlin College Libraries for purchasing books on the culture, history, and arts of African Americans.

The fund honors James Walter Bass (1860-1925) and his daughter Idella Bass Richardson (1891- 1973). James Walter Bass, 1860-1925, was born into slavery in Kirkmansville (Todd County), Kentucky. As a young man, he made his way to Princeton, Indiana, where he enrolled in school and was befriended by a German immigrant. She aided him in attending the Oberlin Preparatory Department from 1884-1886. Mr. Bass eventually settled in Hopkinsville (Christian County) Kentucky, where he married Johnnie Fizer. The Basses had ten children. The eldest, Idella (1891-1972), was born in Hopkinsville and migrated to Chicago, where she attended high school. She eventually settled in Indianapolis and married Adolph Richardson.

Idella Richardson became a guiding force in the lives of the Glazier children who saw in her daily actions the enduring value of human kindness and dignity, even in the face of public prejudice and injustice. Their fund was originally established in 1991 by Professor of Anthropology Jack Glazier and members of his family. Contributors, in addition to Jack, are his brothers and sisters Albert Glazier, Robert Glazier, Samuel Glazier, Marcia Glazier Kolodkin, Harry Glazier, and Geraldine Glazier Pergament. The book fund bearing the names of James Walter Bass and Idella Bass Richardson is their loving tribute to their memories and to the humanity, courage, and grace their lives exemplified.

The Clarence Ward Art Library has received 190 titles from this fund. Below are nine of the books shelved in our art limited access. You can request any of these materials here or by visiting the circulation desk at the Art Library.
