Overview
In the long eighteenth century, dance moved across media, from courtly choreographies to rustic genre scenes. Selections from special and circulating collections show how music, movement, and print found expression together.
An eighteenth-century textile from France depicts a pastoral Savoyard musicking and dancing scene; a rare print offering for the 1712 birthday of Queen Anne of Great Britain notates ballroom dances in music and choreographic notation; and a modern edition presents historical sources for English country dances.
Presented in conjunction with the Oberlin Baroque Performance Institute, “Music in England from Purcell to Handel,” June 15–29, 2025.
