Visual Resources Collection

Glass lantern slide of women with large water pots on their heads in a crowd in Naples, black and white photo.

Oberlin College's Visual Resources Collection, one of the earliest U.S. college 'slide collections,' has existed since the late 19th century.

The primary mission of this collection was to provide visual materials to support the various departmental curricula in the teaching of art, art history, classics, history, and archaeology, as well as providing resources for faculty research. Today, the collection has grown to offer teaching support for the entire Oberlin College community.

The Visual Resources Collection houses glass lantern slides, mounted study prints, 35mm slides, unmounted 8" x 10" photographic prints, architectural postcards, 16mm art films, and digital images. Additionally, the collection includes photographic and projection equipment, both antique and modern, used by Oberlin College in the creation, storage, and delivery of the visual resources.

A large selection of the many thousands of images from the Visual Resources Collection are available to view online.

NOTE: users must be on campus to access the online collection.
