About the Collection

Students at Oberlin are often assigned research projects that involve examining historical visual resources at the Archives. In the 2008-2009 academic year students scanned images to use as illustrations in their papers for courses such as Media & Memory, Meanings of the Memorial Arch, and Approaches to Western Architectural History. To offer these and other images to future students, Archives staff loaded over 200 digital image files of schematic drawings, models, photographs, and ephemera into an image database with metadata required for citation purposes. This collection will grow in response to faculty and student image needs.

The Archives Visual Study Collection is available for educational use to Oberlin College students, faculty, and staff with a College IP address. The collection includes images of architectural records which cannot be disseminated outside of the College. The images may be downloaded and used as illustrations in student papers or for faculty lectures. Attribution is required, with the credit line “Courtesy of Oberlin College Archives.” Please note that these JPEG 2000 images enable click and zoom for close examination of detail. Click several times on the area of the image you wish to enlarge for closer examination. Words highlighted in blue can be searched as keywords by simply clicking on them. You may also browse or perform an advanced search within the database.

For other than educational uses of Archives images, high-quality digital image files must be ordered and permission requested from the College Archivist.
