About the Collection

The Sela G. Wright digital collection offers an original Ojibwe language manuscript in the Oberlin College Archives compiled by Wright for his work as an educator and missionary among the Ojibwe tribe in Minnesota in the 19th century.

Wright was an Oberlin Preparatory Department student from 1840 to 1843 who worked with the Ojibwe tribe for over 40 years, first as a missionary, then as an educator and evangelist. His grammar text and dictionary of Ojibwe words prove culturally significant for the tribe today. This digital project involved collaboration with Anna C. Gibbs, Tribal Elder and Spiritual Leader of the Red Lake Nation, Dr. Anton Treuer, Professor of Ojibwe at Bemidji State University, the Oberlin College Archives and Libraries, and members of the Oberlin College faculty, with technical support from the Center for Research Libraries.
