Using the Collection
Special Collections staff are happy to retrieve physical copies of items from the collection when provided with specific requests. We can makes scans for patrons provided the request is of a reasonable size. We cannot do research or conduct image searches of the materials outside of what is contained in our online finding aids. Much of the material in the Collection has been digitized and is available commercially through various vendors.
There is no complete inventory other than our online catalog, OBIS, which is used for the bulk of the book, pamphlet, and periodical records in the Anti-Slavery Collection. Author, title, and keyword searches restricted to the location of "Main Special Collections" are recommended. Keep in mind that “anti-slavery” is not a Library of Congress Subject Heading. The most appropriate subject heading search to use is: “slavery.” Older catalogs, such as the one compiled by Geraldine Hopkins Hubbard for her 1931 thesis, are interesting for the categories created, but are no longer to be relied on.
