Teaching With the Real Thing: Using Archives and Special Collections in Your Courses
September 10, 2025
Student working with primary source material
Teaching With the Real Thing: Using Archives and Special Collections in Your Courses is a hands-and-minds-on workshop sponsored by the Oberlin College Libraries, the Lemle Center for Teaching & Scholarship, and the Book Studies Program
The half-day symposium will take place September 18th from 8:45AM-1PM, with lunch provided (Please RSVP). Optional tours will be given from 1:00-3:00.
Did you know that Oberlin College Libraries house enormous collections of unique and rare primary materials? Our collections include cuneiform and papyrus texts, early modern illustrated Japanese books, Indonesian shadow puppets, anti-slavery pamphlets, Spanish plays, Renaissance imprints, pre-cinematic devices, first editions of significant scientific and literary works, archives of American social and civil history, musical manuscripts, artists’ books, and much, much more. Come see how your faculty colleagues are teaming up with library curators and archivists to incorporate these primary collections into your classes.
No prior experience working with rare materials is expected. We hope to inspire, through a program of dynamic faculty-curator mini master classes, interaction with distinctive materials, and networking with curators and archivists.
