New Library System Coming Summer 2025

January 21, 2025

We are excited to announce that Oberlin College Libraries will be upgrading its library services platform to Ex Libris Alma/Primo in the summer of 2025. Alma/Primo is the most-used library system in U.S. academic libraries, with more than 65% of Association of Research Libraries using it–including Harvard, Yale, Duke, and the University of Texas–as well as many of our peer institutions, such as Bowdoin, Middlebury, and Williams. The new enterprise software for academic libraries is used to manage day-to-day operations as well as to help faculty and students find and access the information they need for teaching, learning, and research.

“We are looking forward to implementing this state-of-the-art library management platform for our students, faculty, and community,” says Valerie Hotchkiss, the Azariah S. Root Director of Libraries. “It is the gold standard in libraries and will provide better–and more intuitive–access to resources.” Associate Director Paul Heyde, who is spearheading the migration for Oberlin, explains that “the upgrade is part of a state-wide move by all academic libraries in OhioLink” paid for by a grant from the state of Ohio. “This will be a big improvement to our collaborative efforts with academic libraries across the state, streamline many of our internal processes, and significantly improve our ability to provide access to library materials to the Oberlin community.”

Our campus can expect an improved user experience with a more intuitive interface to find print and electronic articles, books, and other kinds of library materials all on one platform. As we get closer to “go live” in late June you will see more information about the new system and changes, including training and other resources that will be available to help you through the transition.
