Overview
Over the years, alumnus H. H. Kung 孔祥熙 (‘06) was generous with gifts to Oberlin College. Today, his many donations of Chinese artifacts can be seen in the Allen Memorial Art Museum, Shansi House, Mary Church Terrell Library’s Special Collections, and the College Archives.
From theatrical costumes and silk court coats to a collection of books about the 24 dynasties of the Chinese Empire 二十四史 (from the Shih Chi 史記 through the Ming 明史) and a large bronze bell from a temple dedicated to Guanyin, a compassionate Buddhist female savior figure (bodhisattva) who was a protector of women and children, all are cherished gifts and enhance Oberlin students’ experiences and knowledge of Asia and Chinese culture.
