Special Collections

The Conservatory Library’s Special Collections contains a wide variety of original and rare materials related to music.

Conservatory Library Special Collections Reading Room

Collection strengths are early American music history, jazz, jazz photography, violin making and violin history, and foundational texts on organology and music theory. Materials include printed books and scores, manuscripts, sound recordings, periodicals, photographs, posters, and other visual materials, artifacts, and ephemera. From 16th-century musical treatises to avant-garde jazz recordings, the Conservatory Special Collections is a valuable resource for students, faculty, and anyone looking to understand music’s indelible impact on society and culture over time.

The Special Collections reading room is located in the East Room of the Conservatory Library, and is open by appointment to anyone interested in viewing our materials.
